GameGyaru is a GameGrumps mascot line
featuring characters created by David Liu.
I've worked with GameGrumps a vew times over the years and was very happy when I was asked to create the music video for an original song by Kaho Kidoguchi, featuring the GameGyaru characters.

The visuals are inspired by a lot of 80s - early 90s Anime such as Sailor Moon, Dirty Pair, City Hunter or California Crisis.

My entry for The Dark Side of the Moon 50th anniversary competition.

I used this opportunity to create a video for one of my favourite songs. Going with the iconic cover art I envisioned a scene in the darkness of space. I tried my best to capture the essence of what the song is about while aslo creating my own setting and explore my own assosiations with it.

I wanted to imagine what a spaceship in art nouveau time would have looked like.
I did some research on real life space travel and the elements needed for a spaceship to function.
Ultimately I decided to go against a fully grounded approach however and rather focus on something that will immediately read as a spaceship to the audience. There is very little time in the song for many establishing shots so I had to prioritize whats most important to tell the story.
Some of my earlier designs ended up looking a bit more like submarines. I really liked the idea of wings as solar panels though. Eventually I settled on a more sleek space shuttle look for the body, the iridescent adjustable wings and a thruster engine with elegant radiators.

The cockpit is a combination of elements taken from technology of different eras. I looked at everything from early film projectors, radios, oscilloscopes, CRTs to steam engines for inspiration. The graphics on the display were inspired by vector images like those used in 2001: A Space Odyssey or the Vectrex. Computer generated but not necessarily digital.
